Welcome Letter:
Welcome to Renaissance Kingdoms and the Town of Chard!
I am Erowyn, Chief Mentor for our fine town. Allow me to offer some basic info and tips to help you get started and avoid some common pitfalls. I tried to keep this short, but there is a lot you need to know.
Renaissance Kingdoms is a really fun game which can be played without taking more than 15 min of your time each day. You choose how much you want to be involved in it.
You will want to explore the town a bit; but DON'T do anything rash yet, like buying anything from the market, or begging at the church. Your primary focus right now should be advancing to level 1. [I’ll tell you more about that in a moment.]
You should visit the Town Hall and read the Mayor’s message, and the Church to read Father Teagan’s message. If you won’t be able to get online for a couple of days, you can go into “retreat” at the church, which “pauses” your character in the game; but don’t click this unless you mean it, because once you do you won’t be able to work that day!
Be sure to visit the Tavern! The tavern is a chat room, where you will no doubt meet other townsfolk, and is an important part of the game. Chardians are a friendly and helpful sort who will happily answer questions and offer advice, or buy you an ale. It will also improve your mood after a hard day at the mines, and keeping your mood high can sometimes earn unexpected rewards!
You should also visit the RK forums [be sure to register using your in-game name!]

Go to “Somerset Inn>Chard Hall” There you will find lots of helpful info for new arrivals, and learn a bit about your fellow citizens also.
You MUST eat every day to stay healthy. Eat one bread, or two corn, whichever is cheaper. Do NOT buy or eat anything other than bread or corn for now. Certain foods provide stat increases, but they will be of no use to you until you reach level 1, and you need to save your money.
You can eat by:
1. Ordering the “Chardian Rye” from the menu in the "Green Bush Inn" tavern
2. Buying bread from the Market [Town>Market>players sell] then eating it by going My home>my inventory>bread> “use.” You should already have 2 bread in your inventory.
Now, about reaching level 1:
You will need to obtain 5 reputation points (RP) and save up 90 pounds.
You must obtain 3 RP from “trust” granted by fellow players and 2 more by “working for the church.” Each player is allowed to give out 2 trust points a week. You can ask for trust from people in the tavern, exchange trust with other new players, or ask for trust in the “ALMS/trust St. Cross” thread in the forums.
Earning money:
You will need to find a job each and every day.
1. You can work at the church, which gains you a RP, but only pays 5P.
2. You can sometimes get a job with the town militia at the town hall.
3. You can sometimes find work by applying for a job [town hall>job announcements] if there is one requiring no skills.
4. The best place for a beginner to work is in the mines; it pays17P. Go to Duchy>Work> and work in the stone or iron mine. The county pays you half the money the next day, and the balance on the following Sunday. You can also enter the miner’s lottery for a chance to win up to 20P. Here:[http://forum.renaissancekingdoms.com/viewtopic.php?t=33683]
5. Don't take any job for less than 15P [except for the church]!
Laws and Crime:
The Duchy of Somerset, to which Chard belongs, has one of the most elaborate [but also strict] set of laws in England, as well as a police force, courts, and jails.[Duchy>Castle>Laws and Decrees]
If you are witness to, or the victim of a crime, please NOTIFY THE POLICE CHIEF [Luja] at once.
Here are a couple of the most commonly misunderstood laws.
Slavery:
The minimum wage for all of Somerset, including Chard, is 15 Pounds. The game defaults to 12, so it's easy to make a mistake. If you see a job for less than 15, don't take it. Notify the Police Chief, and he will straighten it out.
And once you do level up, DO NOT post any jobs for less than 15P! 17 to 20 is the usual range.
Speculation:
Buying up goods from the market and re-selling them at a higher price in the same town is illegal. NEVER do this! Hoarding, dumping, and profiteering effect our markets and our citizens, so they are strictly forbidden. You can consult our Head Merchant [Rebo] with any specific market questions.
If you have any specific legal questions contact the Mayor [Aeryn_Sun], the town Priest, or a mentor, and they will point you in the right direction.
In a week or two, you should have all you need to “level up.” To do this, go to Duchy>Castle>Meet the Count First Secretary. He will take your payment, and grant you citizenship and a field. Don’t choose to be a “vagrant” because you won’t get a field if you do. You can always sell your field on the land market for 400-500 Pounds if you decide not to farm. Check with some other players or the Mayor if you need help choosing what crop or livestock to raise.
These are just some very basic tips, and I am sure you will have many more questions along the way. Your fellow Chardians are always willing to help. Ask someone in a tavern, or the forums, or feel free to use the “Mail” link in the game to contact me or another town mentor. [Erowyn, Atri, Brighda, Crepitus Kipa, or Thorpe] Interested in a buddy to help you out? Contact us because there are many citizens ready to help make your life in Chard as rewarding as possible.
When you are ready to level up, please be sure to send a mail to any mentor to REQUEST THE "LEVEL 1 INFORMATION LETTER," which has more things you'll need to know and even more tips and useful hints that will help you along your way to becoming a successful and prosperous citizen.
Welcome to Chard! Enjoy the game!
Sincerely,
Erowyn
PS: You can help RK grow and prosper by using the links on the main page to “vote” for Renaissance Kingdoms.
Level One Letter:
Congratulations on reaching Level 1!
You are now a full citizen of Chard, and we are proud to have you.
By now, you have probably found your way around to the various places and institutions in town. Now, as you begin your new and prosperous future, let me offer some tips that may help you along the way.
I hope you have taken time to browse the forums, especially the helpful guides in the library.

Now that you are level 1, you can hire workers, raise crops or livestock, travel, and vote in our elections.
Hiring workers:
You can work your own fields, of course, but there are advantages to hiring out the work. You earn 1 Rep Point for each person you employ, and many fields will produce higher yields if they are worked by players with higher stats. This frees you to take a job with someone else, or work elsewhere.
Access your field by going My Home>your home. And clicking on the picture of your field. You can hire from the menu there. Be sure to set your wage at 15 Pounds or more! [See “Laws,” below]
Wood chopping:
A good alternative to earn a decent income once you acquire enough stats( intelligence and strength). Be careful in the forest, once you click on a tree, you WILL cut wood that day whether you intended to or not. Please check the Mayor's message or the forums for details.
Travel:
The roads of Somerset are usually pretty safe, but occasionally there are bandits that may rob or kill you. Talk with someone with some experience before you venture out of town.
Laws:
The Duchy of Somerset, to which Chard belongs, has one of the most elaborate [but also strict] set of laws in England. You can read the Law by going to Duchy>>Castle>>Laws and Decrees. Some things that might not seem illegal could actually be a crime here.
Here are a couple of the most commonly misunderstood laws.
Slavery:
The minimum wage for all of Somerset, including Chard, is 15 Pounds. Do NOT post any job offers for less than 15P! The game defaults to 12, so it easy to make a mistake. If you do, go My Home>My Job Offers> cancel. If it’s too late and you’ve already hired someone at 12, mail the Chief of Police [Luja] at once, and he will tell you how to resolve the issue.
Speculation:
Buying up goods from the market and re-selling them at a higher price in the same town is illegal. NEVER do this! Selling to other towns is more complicated, and you should consult our Town Merchant [Rebo] for some tips on becoming a merchant before setting out to peddle wares in other places.
If you have any questions contact the Mayor, the town Priest, or a mentor, and they will tell you who to ask about specific legal questions.
Politics:
Elections in Somerset are sometimes quite lively. As a citizen, you can vote for the leadership of both your town and the Duchy. Again, you may want to talk with other players for some insight on how the process works, and some of the pitfalls to avoid. The taverns are a great place to do this.
For a mayoral election, you vote from the town hall. For a Duchy election, go to Duchy>>Castle>>Election of the Council and check the various lists running in the upcoming election.
The SAS.
Many people from Chard have joined the official army of Somerset (Somerset Armed Services). A good way to have fun, build stats, and help defend your Duchy. You can join the SAS here:
https://somerset.rpg-board.net/Enter-Hall-c7/SAS-recruitement-office-f34.htmWant to contribute to Chard’s community? Chard has many programs that involve wheat growers, millers, bakers, butchers and others which benefit its citizens. Contact the Mayor [Aeryn_Sun] for more info if you’re interested.
Reaching Level 2:
To reach the next level you will need 35 RP, and 20 in all Stat categories [STR, INT, CHR] and save up 500 Pounds.
Again, welcome to Chard, and feel free to mail any of the Mentor team if you need help.
And, if you haven’t done so, please drop by the taverns and chat with us sometime!
Sincerely,
Your fellow Chardian, ______
