That's a good idea Brighda. I was thinking though, instead of mailing each person another letter, maybe we could just add in what you wrote to the welcome letter. What do you folks think?

[Be aware, like a real life community RK, Somerset county and Chard have laws that if broken can have serious consequences, like the laws on minimum wage and slavery. You can read the law by going to Duchy and then to Law Courts. If you are confused contact me or another mentor.]

Rebo feels foolish. He comnpletely forgot about this Mentor Office. He wanders in and sees the mentor team working hard, so hard they didn't even notice him come in. Then he leaves them to do their work.

(ooc. I totally forgot that there was this whole other section for the mentors and police. Silly me. You all are doing great things! Keep it up!)

OK team, back to work! Enough of that lounging around in the stocks.

Barerose has asked for assitance in helping to reduce the number of slavery cases. And of course, Rebo already pointed out that we weren't really hitting that point with the new arrival's letter. I had hoped that they would read the several other places that information is found [mayor's office, church, forums, laws] BUT it looks like Rebo was right.

I have aslo given some thought to the proposed Level 1 letter we mentioned. And, while in the pillory, I had an idea. Idea

Obviously we can't track when players reach lev one, too complicated. But what we CAN do is insert something into the welcome letter asking the player to mail a mentor when they are ready to level up and REQUEST the level one info! Not all will do so, surely, but I think many will. Or at least it might be worth a try to see what sort of response we get. If we implement the change now, we should begin to seer esults in couple of weeks when new arrivals begin to lev up.

So... Here are my proposed changes [in red] to the current letter, with the copied portion of pertinent law stuff from the lev one letter added, and the "request the level one information letter" passage added also.

What do the rest of you think?

Ero wrote:
This is the letter that is being mailed to the new arrivals.

Welcome to Renaissance Kingdoms and the Town of Chard!
I am Erowyn, Chief Mentor for our fine town. Allow me to offer some basic info and tips to help you get started and avoid some common pitfalls.

Renaissance Kingdoms is a really fun game which can be played without taking more than 10 min of your time each day. You choose how much you want to be involved in it.

You will want to explore the town a bit; but don’t do anything rash yet, like buying anything from the market, or begging at the church. Your primary focus right now should be advancing to level 1. [I’ll tell you more about that in a moment.]

You should visit the Town Hall and read the Mayor’s message, and the Church to read Father Teagan’s message. If you won’t be able to get online for a couple of days, you can go into “retreat” at the church, which “pauses” your character in the game; but don’t click this unless you mean it, because once you do you won’t be able to work that day!

Be sure to visit the Tavern! The tavern is a chatroom, where you will no doubt meet other townsfolk, and is an important part of the game. Chardians are a friendly and helpful sort who will happily answer questions and offer advice, or buy you an ale. It will also improve your mood after a hard day at the mines!

You should also visit the RK forums [be sure to register using your in-game name!]
http://forum.renaissancekingdoms.com/viewforum.php?f=69
Go to “Sommerset Inn>Chard Hall” There you will find lots of helpful info for new arrivals, and learn a bit about your fellow citizens also.

You MUST eat every day to stay healthy. Eat one bread, or two corn, whichever is cheaper. Do NOT buy or eat anything other than bread or corn for now. Certain foods provide stat increases, but they will be of no use to you until you reach level 1, and you need to save your money.

You can eat by:
1. Ordering the “Chardian Rye” from the menu in the Greenbush tavern
2. Buying bread from the Market [Town>Market>player sells] then eating it by going My home>my inventory>bread> “use.” You should already have 2 bread in your inventory.
*Do NOT use the “Order a meal from the town hall” link as it has a bug in it, and nobody likes bugs in their bread.

Now, about reaching level 1:
You will need to obtain 5 reputation points (RP) and save up 90 pounds.

You must obtain 3 RP from “trust” granted by fellow players and 2 more by “working for the church.” Each player is allowed to give out 2 trust points a week. You can ask for trust from people in the tavern, exchange trust with other new players, or ask for trust in the “ALMS/trust St. Cross” thread in the forums.

Earning money:
You will need to find a job each and every day.
1. You can work at the church, which gains you a RP, but only pays 5P.
2. You can sometimes get a job with the town militia at the town hall.
3. You can sometimes find work by applying for a job [town hall>job announcements] if there is one requiring no skills.
4. The best place for a beginner to work is in the mines; it pays over 16P. Go to Duchy>Work> and work in the stone or iron mine. The county pays you half the money the next day, and the balance on the following Sunday. You can also enter the miner’s lottery [http://forum.renaissancekingdoms.com/viewtopic.php?t=33683] for a chance to win up to 20P.

Laws:
The Duchy of Somerset, to which Chard belongs, has one of the most elaborate [but also strict] set of laws in England, as well as a police force, courts, and jails. You can read the Law by going to Duchy>>Castle>>Laws and Decrees. Some things that might not seem illegal elsewhere could actually be a crime here.

Here are a couple of the most commonly misunderstood laws.

Slavery:
The minimum wage for all of Sommerset, including Chard, is 15 Pounds. Do NOT post any job offers for less than 15P! The game defaults to 12, so it easy to make a mistake. If you see a job for less than 15, don't take it. And once you do level up, be careful not to post any jobs for less either, this will make our police chief have to get involved, and he would really rather not!

Speculation:
Buying up goods from the market and re-selling them at a higher price in the same town is illegal. NEVER do this! You can consult our Town Head Merchant [Rebo] with any specific market questions.

If you have any specific legal questions contact the Mayor, the town Priest, or a mentor, and they will point you in the right direction.

In a week or two, you should have all you need to “level up.” To do this, go to Duchy>Castle>Meet the Count First Secretary. He will take your payment, and grant you citizenship and a field. Don’t choose to be a “vagrant” because you won’t get a field if you do. You can always sell your filed on the land market for 400-500 Pounds if you decide not to farm. Check with some other players or the Mayor if you need help choosing what crop or livestock to raise.

These are just some very basic tips, and I am sure you will have many more questions along the way. Your fellow Chardians are always willing to help. Ask someone in a tavern, or the forums, or feel free to use the “Mail” link in the game to contact me or another town mentor. [Erowyn, Sela, Crepitus, Brighda, Atri or Barerose] Interested in a buddy to help you out? Contact us because there are many citizens ready to help make your life in Chard as rewarding as possible.

When you are ready to level up, please send a mail to a mentor to request the "Level 1 Information Letter," which has even more tips and useful hints that will help you along your way to becoming a successful and prosperous citizen.

Welcome to Chard! Enjoy the game!

Sincerely,
Erowyn

PS: You can help RK grow and prosper by using the links on the main page to “vote” for Renaissance Kingdoms.

Two thumbs up from Ero

I will add this to the current letter, but I think the min. wage has been (or will be) raised to 17p, so I'll have to ask and make sure first. Also, the mine wage is now 17p.

I'll post this in the chief mentor's office and ask for the council's opinion.

Thank you Atri

Neutral This was really just a rough draft, lol. It should be ok for now I guess; but I still think it needs tweaking sometime later. For instance: There of a couple of minor typos [I misspelled field at least once] and of course, good point about mine wages going up [I forgot about that] and the paragraph on slavery law is a little awkward. It has a redundancy in it that I need to smooth out and shorten.

I will clean it up a little sometime later. But for now, if you like it, I like it. Very Happy

You're doing a great job, Ero.

your friend,
Atri

And Atri..you *are* "allowed" to take a break once in a while you know Wink

I had some time to re-think my first draft changes. And I have tweaked them again, minor rewording, one or two typo corrections, changed the mine wage to 17P, and included some info on how and who to report crimes to. [in view of the johnkane situation.]

Also, I spoke with Father Teagan last night, and he agreed to make the anti-slavery message more prominent on his church noticeboard. I think he moved it to the top. This should help some.

Again, these are just suggested changes, open for discussion and review. Ero and team members, what are your thoughts?

Proposed new arrival welcome letter [most changes in red, but not all]:

It will also improve your mood after a hard day at the mines, and keeping your mood high can sometimes earn unexpected rewards!

2. Buying bread from the Market [Town>Market>players sell] then eating it by going My home>my inventory>bread> “use.” You should already have 2 bread in your inventory.
*Do NOT use the “Order a meal from the town hall tavern” link as it has a bug in it, and nobody likes bugs in their bread.

4. The best place for a beginner to work is in the mines; it pays17P. Go to Duchy>Work> and work in the stone or iron mine. The county pays you half the money the next day, and the balance on the following Sunday. You can also enter the miner’s lottery for a chance to win up to 20P. Here:[http://forum.renaissancekingdoms.com/viewtopic.php?t=33683]
5. Don't take any job for less than 15P [except for the church]!

Laws and Crime:
The Duchy of Somerset, to which Chard belongs, has one of the most elaborate [but also strict] set of laws in England, as well as a police force, courts, and jails.[Duchy>Castle>Laws and Decrees]
If you are witness to, or the victim of a crime, please NOTIFY THE POLICE CHIEF[Barerose] at once.

Here are a couple of the most commonly misunderstood laws.

Slavery:
The minimum wage for all of Sommerset, including Chard, is 15 Pounds. The game defaults to 12, so it's easy to make a mistake. If you see a job for less than 15, don't take it. Notify the Police Chief, and he will straighten it out.
And once you do level up, DO NOT post any jobs for less than 15P! 17 to 20 is the unusal range.

Speculation:
Buying up goods from the market and re-selling them at a higher price in the same town is illegal. NEVER do this! Hoarding, dumping, and profiteering effect our markets and our citizens, so they are strictly forbidden. You can consult our Head Merchant [Rebo] with any specific market questions.

You can always sell your field on the land market for 400-500 Pounds if you decide not to farm.

When you are ready to level up, please be sure to send a mail to any mentor to REQUEST THE "LEVEL 1 INFORMATION LETTER," which has more things you'll need to know and even more tips and useful hints that will help you along your way to becoming a successful and prosperous citizen.

Welcome to Chard! Enjoy the game!

Sincerely,
Erowyn

It is long but it looks good; and Ero you can break the lists up sometimes and let us send some letters you do not need to do it all. However until further notice I am on retreat because my home computer is on the fritz. I am using a computer in the library and am limited in what I can do here.

Great job Atri, thanks again. I've already started sending the new letter out to the new arrivals.

And thank you Brighda, actually I *have* been a tad busier lately. Here's the list of the new births from June 1st to June 3rd. I've mailed the ones born on June 1st and June 2nd, any volunteers to mail the rest? (If not, I'll be sure to mail them right after reset)
*EDIT: mail has been sent to all
