I was thinking about the judging. How will we go about that? Are going to judge one event each or have more judges for one? Any ideas on that? Also about the notice to everyone are we going to send messages to people around Chard like mentors do with the welcome letter or will our good mayor send a mass message? Oh and another thing, is this carnival (I guess we can call it a carnival) only available to people in Chard or to Somerset or to England or to anyone?

My thoughts here sir:

In order to spread the work load around and not task one person too heavily, we should divvie up the responsibilities.

I will run the tug of war, and will do the log rolling game I posted above, if no one objects. Marshy felt the mild profanity wouldn't be a problem if we warned people in advance and gave them the option of turning the sound down first.

The mentors have no effective way of reaching the entire populace, only new arrivals. so best to get the word out by other means. I will announce it in the Chard Pulp as soon as we come up with a name and dates. Can do that this weekend if a final decision is made by reset tonight.

Also we can post an announcement in the forums, as a teaser, with minimal details. I would be willing to do that also, if it pleases the council for me to do so. I will also issue invitations in the "Inn's" of the other sommerset towns.

The mass mailing by the mayor is a good idea too sir, good thinking.

We have talked about the event being open to all of somerset, and even travelers from other counties, come one, come all. The more the merrier. Particiapation is the key to success here, and I don't think we should rely solely on Chardians, as our forum participation is limited to just a few regulars. Also, inviting other towns to attend will foster good will and is the neighborly thing to do.

As far as a name: I like the sound of "festival" bettter than carnival. And something "wood" themed. For that matter, "The Chard Wood Festival" is fine with me. Any other thoughts?

As our dear, get-er-done Mayor would say: "Let's just DO this thing."

Good work here in the council, Thorpe sir. I think you have the makings of a fine mayor someday.

Atri Darling,

No! The grey lanes are the the not used area. Runners start from green square and the finish is on the red. And all lanes has the same number of square. I think.

Oh i see now. Smile Thank you sir! I knew there must be something I was missing.
I plan to use the linked game I found for the log rolling. Can this chart thingie be used for a foot race or something? How do you "roll" the dice to determine how many spaces you move. [RK forums don't have that feature, do they?]

Also, Marshy and I came up with another wood related event. I am going to run a "Cabor Toss" which scotsmen will recognize. It's where the big burly men in kilts balance a big log and then flip it end for end to see who can throw it the farthest.

I am going to combine a players strength with a random number between 1 and 255 to determine the winner. That way the strongest will have an advantage [naturally], but wont be guaranteed a victory. A combination of strength and luck will be needed. I plan to use the same formula we use in the miner's lotto to assign the random numbers, and screen shots of strength to enter.

What does everyone think? Good idea, bad idea, good idea but needs modification?

Good idea with the Chard Pulp Atri I never thought about it. And about volunteering now... I would volunteer as one of the judges for the art competition unless anyone has any objections. So who will fill up the next two places? Atri are you still interested in participating in the art competition or might you be interested in judging? And also I was thinking to have more judges per event (I guess 3 is good) so would be fairer for the participants unless of course the event is based around a formula or number or something like that. So like the art competition... ( Razz Does it make sense because it does to me...?!?) or is the art competition the only one that doesn't require a number kinda thing? As for sayings I got some so tell me your opinion on them:

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Actions speak louder than words.

An empty purse frightens away friends.

Bad news travels fast.

Charity begins at home.

Don't judge a book by its cover.

He who plays with fire gets burnt.

Knowledge in youth is wisdom in age.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

The end justifies the means.

You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

I'll be waiting for peoples' opinions,

aaaaaahhhhh Thorpe I love you. Those are awesome! I think I'll be a judge with Thorpe, so that leaves one more judging position. The only thing that really needs a judge is the Art comp; everything else you can tell who the winner is by looking at the scores.

Here's an idea! Cause Chard is so cheap and poor and lazy and all that junk (Razz) would people want to the council to fund some prizes? if the festival is open to all of Somerset, I don't see what would be the problem really. We could also send invitations to Dukes and mayors of other out of Somerset towns, but to collect any government funded prizes, you would need to be in somerset. That way we can get people to travel here and say hi Cool

aaaaaaaand I did have other things to say, but I left this post for so long I forgot what it was Embarassed

- The festival begin on August 18 and run until the 25th, with winners announced on sunday the 26th.

Sorry ladymarshmellow but I don't seem to understand your post. Razz (it might just be me). You mean you would like people from the council to contribute with money (i suppose) in order to get some prizes or would you want all Somerset to contribute? I didn't quite get that... As for the dates Atri I think I'd give thumbs up because we seem to have most of this figured out unless anyone has anything to add. *Thorpe looks around and sees nobody says anything... (or not yet)* And one last thing WE NEED ONE MORE JUDGE FOR ART COMPETITION!!! Suspect Anyone?!? Very Happy

Not a bad idea, if we can afford it. Mike sir, does the town have enough money for prizes [or inventory items that can be used as prizes]?

How many prizes do we need? how many games are there?
Pirzes for:
- Art comp
- Archery comp
- log rolling game
- cabor toss
- crep's foot race thingie, did we solve the dice roll issue?
- Why not a poetry comp also, with a wood theme?

What about team events? prizes or not?
- tug of war
- relay race

no prize activities:
- pounce booths [who is running this?]

Which events am I overlooking? Someone fill in the gaps for me.

Mike what do we have in stock that we can offer as prizes? bread? meat? cash?

Agree that prizes must be awarded in chard.

Need to consider whether this will deter participation by out of towners. Especially lev 0 who can't travel, or mayors and busy folks who simply cannot take time off to make the trip. Might be better to NOT have prizes for this reason.

Not sure if this a good thing or a bad thing. What do the rest of you think? we need some input here. prizes or no prizes?

thorpe sir, i think lady m was talking about TH funding the prizes, not the councilors, or private sector.

Also, I say draft the mayor as the third judge. He wants this done, so there ya go, your third judge is Mikeblack, by Atrinian Decree, lol. Razz

Aye, I understand what ladymarshmellow meant now. I also agree Mike could be the judge if he accepts. As for the prizes yes it might lower the participation of the out of town people but I have a feeling that particiaption might be low already so getting people from our town more interested might be an added bonus. Or I might be wrong...

I was thinking (as usual hahaha) that prizes for the team games, if any, should be something symbolic so people don't end up arguing about it. As for the poetry competition I'm pretty sure it goes under art competition. As for the rest of your questions you'll have to wait for Mike because he knows probably the best if the TH can afford all this. So after we solve all this we done? As in, are we still keeping the dates set or will we have to change them for the festival?

Personally, I feel it would be simpler NOT to have any tangible prizes at all; but rather to simply "award" or recognize the winners in the thread of each contest, and in a final wrap-up thread at the end, acknowledging all the winners. They can of course add "1st Place, Chard Archery Competition" or something to there forum sig if they wanted.

Alternatively, a free beer in the tavern is a pretty simple prize to award. And although it it not of great value, it is the thought that counts.

As for the dates, I still think they are well within reason. If No one objects, and if the Mayor gives me the green light, I will can make the announcement about one week prior to the suggested start date, in the forums, the Pulp, and the Inns of the other towns.

I suggest inviting folks from Dorchester and Exeter also, as they are neighboring towns, even if in other counties. They are both within one days travel [2 nodes] of Chard.

Rebo pokes his head in

I personally think that we should give out tangible prizes. I am sure we can solicit donations from some the county, the town hall, and/or some of Chard's richies. While I would not consider myself rich by any means, I could be convinced to make a donation (money, veggies, meat, or corn). Tangible prizes along with recognition and beer would encourage more people to show up I would hope.

Those who make a donation can be listed as presenters of the festival. For instance, on all the advertisements for the festival they can get a mention- a bigger mention for a bigger donation.

Hmmm, ok I see your point.

I like the idea of presenters or "sponsors" and we can solicit among the tavern owners and shop keepers. But of course once we do this, the cat is out of the bag, so we need to be ready to roll.

I do NOT favor asking the county for prizes. They have enough on their plate, and I want this to be a Chard event. Invite outsiders to participate yes, but WE need to run it ourselves. County tends to usurp ideas and hijack events if you aren't careful.

All true. How many prizes do we want exactly? I know the more the merrier, but what is the minimum number of prizes (if each event got one prize)?
Who in the Town council would be willing to donate a prize? Perhaps we do not need to let the cat out of the bag if we can scrounge up enough stuff.

Well lessee,

art comp: run by thorpe, mikeblack and.. i forgot the thrid, lady m?
archery comp:
cabor toss: run by atri
log rolling: run by atri
pounce booth: no prize needed?
poetry comp: run by____? atir will be a judge, rebo, another?

am i missing any?

Rebo which one or two are you going to do? will you judge the poetry with me? Also I think barerose would make a great poetry judge. I've heard his prose when he speaks of his lovely wife, and he is quite the charmer. Unless he'd like to enter of course.

as for prizes, count me in for two prizes of 1 meat for 10 pounds.

I still like the idea of letting shopkeeps and tavern owners do sponsorships. good advertising for them, good incentive to participate also. there will be a one wekk delay from time of announcement to start of event, so shouold be time to solicit sponsors at the time we announce. [announce august 11, begin august18]

and i am sure we can call on the mentor team, kipa, brighda etc to help with judging and such if needed.

come on folks, talk it out, let's get the details ironed out.

I would love to be a judge for the poetry contest and/or any other contest in need of judges.

I will donate 30 pounds worth of prizes (meat, veggies, corn, money). I'll figure out the exact number(s) of each in a few days when I have my inventory more stabilized.

"mad" as in insane? Or "mad" as in angry? I plead guilty to the former, but can't think why anyone would feel the latter.

And yes sir, I think we are on track with this. We can do it. You have bigger fish to fry. BUT we will need you to be a judge in one of the comps i think.

Thorpe, do not feel obligated to donate. I would say that you actually shouldn't considering your finances. Donations should be left to those who have enough expendable income, we have enough rich Chardians that we can get donations from.

the site has been uber dodgy lately, not allowing me to post (I wrote it once, it didn't send, I gave up Razz)

anyhoo, points:

- new idea: crowing a king and queen of the wood festival (do we have a name yet?) people submit their nominations to me via PM, and I announce a winner.....they don't win much, just a cool title Razz

- back there I was talking about the county council funding a few prizes, but it would be nice if we'd do it ourselves.Teagan might help (if I can get a hold of him, the slippery priest) (However, I will be posting in the council, asking for ideas (in light of the current 'situation')

- the first phrase I think we should use for the art comp is: 'Charity begins at home.' cause of that thread Maz has! Very Happy

we need a name dammit! think Marshie, think!
- poetry comp? coolio! definately on wood/trees/wood in trees

I really really really wish you NOT do that, Marshy ma'am. Neutral
The last thing we need is the County having their fingers in this. Just my opinion.

We have more than enough resources and means to do this ourselves.

The "Charity begins at home" idea is a great one.
